Background of the Study
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain a leading cause of mortality worldwide, including in Nigeria, where the burden of heart disease is escalating due to factors such as hypertension, diabetes, and lifestyle changes (Oluyomi et al., 2024). In response to the complexity of cardiac care, multidisciplinary care teams have become a standard approach in many healthcare settings. These teams typically consist of healthcare providers from various specialties, including cardiologists, nurses, nutritionists, pharmacists, and physiotherapists, each contributing their expertise to improve patient outcomes (Adebola & Okoro, 2023). Nurses play a critical role within these teams, particularly in the provision of direct patient care, education, and emotional support, all of which are essential components of effective cardiac care (Okoronkwo et al., 2023).
At the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Abeokuta, multidisciplinary cardiac care teams are being implemented to manage the increasing number of cardiovascular patients. However, the specific role and effectiveness of nurses in these teams have not been comprehensively evaluated. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of nurses' involvement in these multidisciplinary teams in improving patient care and outcomes, particularly in managing patients with chronic cardiac conditions.
The involvement of nurses in multidisciplinary teams may offer several advantages, including improved communication, quicker decision-making, and more holistic patient care. However, there are challenges related to team dynamics, resource allocation, and the integration of various healthcare professionals’ input. Evaluating the effectiveness of nurses in these teams will help identify strengths and areas for improvement in team-based care.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the increasing integration of multidisciplinary teams in cardiac care, the contribution of nurses within these teams is often undervalued or inadequately assessed. Nurses are essential to the holistic management of cardiovascular diseases, yet there is limited research on their specific roles and the impact of their involvement on patient outcomes at Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta. This study aims to fill this gap by evaluating the effectiveness of nurses' participation in multidisciplinary cardiac care teams.
Objectives of the Study
Research Questions
Research Hypotheses
Scope and Limitations of the Study This study will focus on assessing the role of nurses in multidisciplinary cardiac care teams at Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta. It will be limited by the scope of data availability from the hospital, the variability in team structures, and the potential differences in nurse roles across departments.
